Edinburgh's Christmas lights were switched on last night by cycling legend Sir Chris Hoy, with an estimated audience of 26,000 joining in the countdown!
Hundreds of entertainers from schools and community groups put on shows at 12 stages set along the length of George Street. The dazzling displays included performances of everything from LED hula-hooping to African drumming.
What a fantastic experience! Enjoy the festive season with us in Edinburgh until the 5th of January 2014. What is on the palette this week?
- Limbo (St. Andrew Square)
Witness heart-stopping illusions, mind-bending manoeuvres, breathtaking dance moves and thrilling live music with a coterie of highly skilled international performers. This show comes from London to a strictly limited Christmas season.
- Captain Flinn and the pirate Dinosaurs (St. Andrew Square)
Action packed theatrical experience with live music, puppetry, physical performance and dastardly dinosaurs. Based on the award winning book by Giles Andreae and Russell Ayto.
- Ice rink (East Princes Street Gardens Terrace)
Take your skates and take a turn around the glittering ice rink! Enjoy the scenery of the Big Wheel and Edinburgh's famous skyline as an unrivalled backdrop.
- New Big Wheel (East Princes Street Gardens)
There is a new and improved Big Wheel this year. The weather-proof pods, each seating six people, will take you round and give you unrivalled views of Edinburgh. As the pod door closes, you will hear a short historical tour of the view and the city. The wheel is from Amsterdam and its 20,000 lights will light up the centre of Edinburgh.
- Real Christmas Tree Maze (East Princes Street Gardens)
This is something new for this year. A joy for children and adults alike, explore the maze in East Princes Street Gardens – can you make your way to the centre and back again? If you do find the centre, then Santa’s elves will be waiting for you with a present. It sounds a great fun! I will try it!
- The Star Flyer (St. Andrew Square)
At nearly 60 metres high Start Flyer is truly awesome. Take your seat and view Edinburgh like you have never seen it before.....with 360 degrees views over the rooftops and maybe with your eyes firmly shut! The ultimate ride! - This is not for me, that is for sure!
- Carousels (St. Andrew Square and East Princess Sreet Gardens)
Head down to the Christmas Market and ride one of the beautiful musical carousels - single decker on St. Andrew Square or the double-tiered carousel in East Princes Street Gardens. (Opens until 10pm.)
- Royal Norvegian Advert Concert ( St. Gile's Cathedral) 25th of November
Music and Carols fror Advent and Christmas by musicians from Hordaland, Norway
- Nativity Carol Concert (St. Andrew Square)
Join for a traditional carols round the nativity scene in St. Andrew Square accompanied by musicians of the St. George's Choir.
- The great Edinburgh Santa Fun Run (West Princes Street Gardens) 8th of December
Once more Scotland's fundraising Santas will run, walk and stroll around Princes Street Gardens which is spread over a short 2km circuit. The great Edinburgh Santa Fun Run is a great way to enjoy time with friends, family while raising money for the deserving cause When You Wish Upon A Star and you do not have to be a runner to take part.
- St. Andrew's Day (Grassmarket) 30th of November
On 30th November the world celebrates St Andrew's Day, Scotland's national day.
Edinburgh's celebrations welcome award winning musicians, Breabach, presenting a collaboration of fellow Scottish artists in a celebration of Scotland's national bard. As well as Breabach's own Ewan Robertson and Megan Henderson, featured singers include the incredible Dougie MacLean OBE and Blazin' Fiddles live from the city's Grassmarket.Join for a day of family friendly events where as well as live music, you can sample food and drink, dance in an outdoor ceilidh or wow your little ones with traditional tales from Edinburgh's Storytelling Centre.This event is part of Scotland's Winter Festival.
